Survey Says....

A lot of the teachers I work with are pretty upset that we have to return to work on Monday the 2nd. I must admit I am one of those teachers. The reason for most of us being upset is that the 2nd is considered a business holiday, meaning most businesses are closed INCLUDING day care! Which means not only are most teachers having to pay their monthly day care bill but also pay for a babysitter for the day (defeating the purpose of working for a day when you turn around and give a babysitter your pay).

Which begs the question, What in the world are they (the board) thinking?!?!?! I mean do you not realize that probably 70% (if not more) of your employees have children, let alone children under the age of five that have to be taken care of?!?!? Maybe we should all bring our children to work that day and take a little visit to the main offices of the county. Now looking ahead to next year's calendar New Year's Day is on a Tuesday, and guess what...we go back to work on the 2nd, and the kids come back on that Thursday...two days....really!?!?!?

So here's my survey, when do you go back to school? What are your thoughts about this?

Our high school teachers go back on the 3rd. All other teachers and students go back the 4th. I know my kindergarten team is going to work on our own the 3rd though, because we need a day without kiddos!

We go back on the 3rd. This ended up being one of those shorter Christmas vacations, so I am trying to enjoy every moment. I'm sorry you have to go back so soon. By the way, I ADORE your classroom photos!

We go back on the 4th...kids on the 5th. But we didn't get out until the 21st.
I'm sorry you have to go back so soon. It is tough to feel like you got no vacation!!

We go back the 3rd and our break didn't start until Dec. 23rd at 3:30. I was literally running in restaurants picking up the last of my giftcards (because I didn't have time to finish Christmas shopping) then flying up the highway to change from my hot chocolate & gingerbread stained clothes into something presentable for my family Christmas party. I'm tired just writing that sentence. I'm always interested to see how long others have. It annoys me but it makes me curious.. how can the school schedules be SO different across the country??

We go back on the 2nd. We didn't get out until the 22nd so we aren't even getting two full weeks. I don't know what our board was thinking!

My last day of school was Dec 22 so I don't go back until the 9th. Last year we had that problem too, we went back to school the Monday after New Years and it sucked. I really liked going up until the bitter end, and think we had to 'fight' for that this year.

We got out on the 16th and don't back until the 9th. But that third week is a week of Furlough Days so I'm not sure what would have happened otherwise. In the past, we have taught up until the 23rd so as not to come back until the 7th or so.
I feel really bad for you if it makes you feel any better!

We got out on the 16th and go back on the 3rd. Nothing around where I live is open on the 2nd! That's a total bummer for you :(

That is rough!! I go back on the 5th, and our last day was the 21st. We don't have any teacher days though - it's straight to full classes on the 5th!

We didn't get out for break until the end of the day on the 22nd. Teachers return on the 3rd, and students come back on the 4th. This has been one of our shortest breaks.

We were to go back on Wednesday, Jan. 4th for a teacher in-service day to finish up grade cards. However, our principal told us that if our report cards are finished then we can come back when the kiddos come back on the 5th. Our last day was on the 21st so I am so excited that I have an extra day.

We go back on Tuesday BUT we had a full day on Friday! That was a shock. My kids were totally off. Too old for a babysitter but I still didn't like to leave them for the day.

Last day was the 16th and YES, we also go back on the 2nd! We have two full days of Professional Development on other campuses. BUT.. our grades must be in the computer, verified and finalized by Tuesday so many teachers have been working over the holidays or right now (like ME!).

We got out on the 23rd and go back on the 4th. It does seem like it was a very short break, but at least we weren't back on the 2nd! My son got out on the 23rd as well, but doesn't have to go back until Jan. 9

We got out on the 22nd and went back on the 2nd. It was a short break and then to make things worse my 18 year old had to have his tonsils removed on the 27th. At least he doesn't have to go back to college until the 9th.

Happy New Year,

The bottom line is this... Neither the BOEs nor the superintendents give a rat's hind parts about us lowly teachers and our families. We're expected to basically choose our students or our families. When you are a young first or second year teacher, it's fine, but once you get married and start having kids, it becomes a battle. My husband and I have been married 6 months and are starting to seriously consider getting pregnant, but the sick part is that on my head, I'm constantly thinkig about how it could effect my school schedule...
